Michael remembers getting baptized in the Teton River

Memories of the Bates Ward

  1. I turned 8 on April 21, 1963. I could have been baptized on the first Saturday in May, however, the baptismal font at our stake center in Driggs, Idaho was under construction so I had to wait to be baptized. May came and went as did June and July. Finally there was talk that the baptismal font wouldn’t be ready for some time, so I had to make a decision; wait and be baptized after the construction on our stake center was complete or else get baptized in August in the Teton River. I had already waited long enough so I voted to be baptized in the Teton River. So we made the necessary arrangements and picked the spot on the river where we could have just a little privacy, which was just around the corner from the bates bridge just west of Driggs as if you were heading west from Driggs to the ranch. It was about 100 yards back south and west of the bridge on the corner just before the bridge. There was a little trail that led through the trees so as to get to the edge of the river. I remember it being cold and dad, Weston, performed the ordinance. The actual day was 24 Aug 1963. After the baptism it seemed like we ate watermelon as a refreshment to celebrate the occasion. As I speak of baptisms on different occasions I love sharing with others of my experience of being baptized in a river because there aren’t many kids that get to be baptized in a river today because we usually have a baptismal font available.
