  1. I remember as a young child going to Arizona with the small family and living in Mesa, Arizona either with Grandpa and Grandma Carl and Alena Ripplinger or a house nearby. Terry was 4, I was 3, and Debbie was just a toddler. We would live in Bates on the ranch during the summer and then go down to Mesa so that dad could work to earn some money during the winter months. I remember loving to go over to the temple because Grandpa Carl would take us on a tour of the temple grounds. I remember him explaining everything about the landscape to us. We would also go to see the cotton fields nearby when dad wasn't working. Mom and dad would say that I could spot a pecan tree a mile away. I also remember loving to pick a fresh orange off of the tree and eating it. It is so much better tasting than the store bought oranges. They were so much juicer. I also remember making friends with with grandpa and grandma Ripplinger's neighbor kids. When Terry and I were younger, maybe one year younger, we got in trouble for painting a neighbors garage for them. I think that we had watched dad or grandp doing something similar so when we got the chance we must of thought we could paint just as well. However, we got in trouble even though it must of been a masterpiece. I guess the neighbor didn't think that we were that good of painters.
We also enjoyed going to North Pioneer Park and playing in the park. As I remember it we loved playing shuffleboard with Grandpa Carl.
