Grandpa and Grandma Atkinson As a young boy I could remember going down to grandpa and Grandma Atkinson’s home in Chapin. Once while Terry and I were down at Grandpa and Grandma Atkinson’s home we started teasing the geese. Terry and I were not very old so maybe we didn’t understand how mean they could be. Needless to say those geese would chase after us and bite us. I also remember having to carry drinking water in from the creek. I can’t believe we didn’t get sick more often from drinking water that was not purified. They also had an old outhouse for a restroom. Aunt Ardella and Uncle Jack would come down as well so that we could all enjoy a nice Thanksgiving dinner together. It seemed like Uncle Don would come over as well. We would have quite a number of people in that old house. It was only a 3 room house. It had a small kitchen, a master bedroom, and the front room. The stove was an old wood burning stove. We would always get a kick out of dad and Uncle Jack getting into political discussions as they would call it. Jack was democrat and dad was republican. They would get in debates about which party was corrupt. We would go down to Grandpa and Grandma Atkinson’s for Thanksgiving dinner and that would be the discussion. No wonder Terry and I would venture outside to investigate the animals, especially the geese. We would also get Ardella’s kids to come and explore with us around their farm as well. Grandpa Atkinson worked on the railroad. I can remember watching TV as well. It seemed like they had an old black and white TV. We would sit around and watch some of the classic football games on TV. It seemed like we would all pick sides between Oklahoma and Nebraska or Texas. It seemed like most of the time it was Oklahoma and Nebraska that would play Thanksgiving weekend. They had some classic battles over the years. Some would pick Oklahoma and others would favor Nebraska. Needless to say it set us up for everyone cheering for one of them. I think that I always favored Nebraska. Once dinner was prepared we would all sit around the table that was placed in the center of the front room. It seemed like it was always about 80 degrees. We would be dying from the heat. I believe this particular picture was taken at Jack and Ardella's house in Tetonia.
Sherry: Going to Aunt Ardella Berry's was always enjoyable for me. Ardella was always so nice and she was always my favorite Aunt. She always had candy to eat and I remember finding candy in her dishwasher one time.
Tammie: I remember going to Grandma and Grandpa Atkinson's for Thanksgivings. Weston and Uncle Jack always seemed to talk politics. Uncle Jack was a democrat and Dad (Weston) was a republican. We didn't do a lot of get togethers with the Atkinson cousins.
Terry said: I remember thanksgiving dinner at the atkinson home as the 1st winter snow storm. we were always late for thanksgiving dinner. we were late because we had to get the cows off the forest or round them up for their first winter feeding. yet as late as we were the meal wasn't completely cooked. they had the old wood/coal burning oven. the temperatures were hard to control. between all the cooks they couldn't remember if they salted the turkey and food enough so they would salt it again and again and then Jack, dad, and whoever else worshipped salt would add some more at serving time. > i beleive the political argument was instigated by the atkinson brothers. it might have been burt. the worst part of Burt and his family stayed with jack overnight so they must have settled their differences somehow. they were always ready for another debate for another year.
